When you get in the car with your friends of family the chances are they will have a relaxed steering style, allowing the steering wheel to just slip through their grip after rounding a corner. This relaxed style is actually breaking the rules, when you are driving you will need to adhere to the 10 to 2 or quarter to 3 rule, you might recognise it from the pass plus logo! At all times you should have at least one hand on the steering wheel and you should never let it slide in your grip.
Before sitting the practical driving exam you should be able to:
• Keep a gentle grip on the wheel at either the Ten to Two or Quarter to Three positions. A firm grip tires the forearms, your arms should be relaxed.
• Steer gradually and smoothly, no sudden jerks.
• When straightening up control the movement of the wheel – do not allow it to pass freely through your grip.
• Pay attention to road markings, it is essential you stick to them.
• Leave a doors width (1 meter) distance between your door and park cars.
“Pay attention to the road” and “Keep your eyes on the road” are things you can expect to hear your instructor exclaim as you look down to change the gears – it is essential that you learn to operate the controls without having to look.
You should look far down the road ahead of you so you have as long as possible to adjust your steering for any approaching hazards, this will keep your steering smooth and keep you in control of the vehicle.
Try and anticipate your hand positions as you approach corners, for instance if you are going to turn right you will find this easier if you have moved your right hand to the 12 o’clock position, likewise when turning left put your left hand to 12 o’clock.
