How to perform the cockpit drill.

« Back to tips

Being a good driver is more than just being able to keep safe while the car is moving, it is essential that you perform a cockpit drill each time you go to sit down in the driver’s seat. As you open the door make sure you’ve checked for oncoming traffic/pedestrians.

Before sitting the practical driving exam you should be able to:
• Make sure all the doors are closed, even if there are other people sitting next to the doors – it’s your responsibility.
• Make sure your head restraint and seat are adjusted correctly. – it is likely that the last person in the car had a different body shape from you. If you are quite tall the head restraint may not go to the recommended height, just put it as high as you can.
• Check your mirrors are properly adjusted – you shouldn’t have to move your head much to see in the mirror.
• Fasten your seatbelt.
• Make sure the hand brake is on and the gearstick is in neutral before starting the engine

Learn and perform this drill each and every time you get into the car.
