How to drive in floods.

« Back to tips

Floods can be deceptive and deadly. Recently we have seen increased flooding across the UK and it is more imperative then ever that all drivers know how to adapt their driving appropriately.

There are many different types of flooding. Many of us will be familiar with the type of flooding that happens closest to us but less familiar with the other types of floods that can occur around the country.

River Floods:
These occur when the water level of the river is flowing higher than the river’s banks causing an overflow.

Coastal Floods:
These floods can occur in coastal areas during periods of bad weather. This is particular dangerous at times of high tide where the water in the rivers meets the sea.

Urban Floods:
Urban areas that are built-up with tarmac, concrete and surface cover, experience a much higher run off than more rural areas without solid ground. This is why heavy rain in cities can seem much worse than in the countryside.

Flash Floods:
These are distinguished from other floods because they happen in less than 6 hours. They usually occur in low lying areas, areas of saturated soil and after or during a storm. Never try and drive through an area of flash flooding, turn around and find another route.

• If you suspect it will flood, park your car on higher ground.
• During flooding and extreme weather, try not to not drive unless it is absolutely necessary.
• Take great care when driving through flooded areas. If you are unsure of water depth do not attempt to drive through it.
• Fast-moving water can easily sweep away the average car – stay away from fast flowing flood waters.
• Always allow on-coming traffic to go pass first.
• Your catalytic converter (modern cars only) could break if it becomes submerged in water.
• Just a small amount of water sucked into the engine will cause serious damage to your engine. This is especially true of diesel and turbo charged engines.
• Driving without reasonable care or consideration is punishable by a fine of up to £2,500.
• Always remember to test your brakes after you drive through water.
• Gently apply the brakes as you drive to dry them out.

There are various resources online for finding out about flooding in your area. Always check when you go on a long journey that you have your mobile phone and adequate supplies in case you get lost.
